The Cyber security subscription designed for Housing associations

The housing sector has not been exempt from the rise in cyber-attacks particularly due to the pandemic when rapid digitalisation of services and the introduction of home working has increased the attack surface and allowed more opportunities for malicious actors to infiltrate organisations using vectors such as phishing, malware, and ransomware attacks. Recently, there has been an increase in the number of publicly acknowledged ransomware attacks committed against the housing sector. These have included high-profile instances of public sector and not-for-profit organisations unfortunately falling victim to such attacks.

The Regulator of Social Housing Sector Risk Profile Report 2021 highlights data security as an increased threat to organisations who have a duty of care to tenants and staff to protect sensitive data from increasing data security risks. It states in the report ‘Failure to adequately ensure the security of data risks a breach of trust between the provider and its stakeholders, damage to services, potential penalties, and harm to tenants. ‘The RSH stipulate that all providers must comply with the Data Protection Act 2018, and Boards must seek assurance that their IT security function is safe and secure and that security vulnerabilities are appropriately mitigated. Boards must also understand the risks of processing personal data with third parties, including the need to undertake due diligence on third parties’ security measures, using standardised contractual clauses where necessary, and documenting where data is located.

A well-protected organisation has the potential to be confident and the most innovative. The smartest housing associations don’t just manage cyber risk, they use it as a source to develop, to stay safely at the forefront of the benefits of digitalisation and to strengthen their reputation. Technology makes many things possible, but possible doesn’t always mean safe. As cyber threats grow in volume and sophistication, and technology becomes essential for meeting the needs of your tenants, staff, suppliers and society, your cyber security must build resilience and trust.
